THE DEADLY BLACK ROSE 100

Souvenir edition of the H&T - on white paper and with colour!

The Herald & Times is pleased to announce to the citizens of Bumcrack that the mystery of the ‘Black Rose’ murders has been solved though the perpetrator has fled the city and is now being sought by the State police.

After intense interrogation, local plantsman Alan Titchmarsh admitted that he had sold black rose blooms on several occasions to a woman whose identity he did not know. Sergeant Vienna went back to his premises with Sophie, a detective working with the Smokey & Forest Detective Agency who have been assisting the Bumcrack PD and who had found a black rose petal there identified by DNA testing as from the same strain as the blooms found in the murder victims mouths. A credit card reader was found and taken to Forest for examination. He was able to access the records of all transactions and found that the same credit card had been used for identical value purchases just two days before each of the murders pointing to the identity of the murderer.

Police chief Kayden was able to establish from the credit card company that the card used was in the name of Bumcrack’s own Ella Boomer, already serving a community sentence for her activities with ‘Ella’s Relations’ above the old Bumcrack Barber Shop and Grill. The last transaction had been just two days before.

As this suggested another murder was imminent, police presence was increased in the square where victims had previously been attacked but to no avail. Detective Sophie went to her under cover evening shift at ‘Hair We Are’, the salon now operating in the old Barber Shop premises, to find the proprietor Kristoff shot in one of the chairs, with a black rose in his mouth.

It later transpired that Ella had been seen going to the White Thigh saloon by Sergeant Vienna an hour earlier, Bystanders in the square had later seen her going into the alley by the Mayor’s house.

Officer Tanja guessed that she could have been heading for the campsite where she had rendezvoused with her brother some days ago and set of for the location. Ella had clearly been there as her backpack with her work clothes was found in a tent but Ella had already left the area and there were signs of a very recent canoe launch into the river.

Sergeant Vienna later arrived on scene and agreed that pursuit was not an option as Ella would have gone beyond the City limits. The backpack was brought back for forensic examination and the State Police notified of the fleeing suspect.

Chief Kayden declared the case solved even if the suspect had escaped and rewarded his crew in the traditional manner.

Kayden: You’re back without Ella – so what’s the story?

Tanja: I guessed she’d go to the campsite where she met her brother the other day.

Vienna: She’d been there, left her old clothes in her backpack and gone off downstream.

Kayden : I’ll put out a Statewide alert.

Tanja: Her backpack’s already gone to forensics, might be some of Kristoff’s DNA there.

Vienna: And with Forest’s evidence that she bought roses just before each murder ……

Kayden: Yes, we’ve done all we can so there’s only one thing for it.

Vienna: -No Ella – and you’re heading back?

Tanja: That’s right Sarg. I’ve got her backpack in an evidence bag but she’s moved on.

Vienna: No onward trail?

Tanja: Footprints down to the edge of the stream and marks look like a canoe launched.

Vienna: OK, we’d better get back then – and you can ride this thing, I’ll have my bike back!

Tanja: Yes Sergeant.
